Bright and contrasting colours are a key element that is shared across all my designs.
Final product
The final design was based on a vintage style that highlights mostly the texture and colour tone of the images.
Our digipak's main themes revolve around metamorphosis and revenge. We chose to use butterflies as a symbol for the characters' changing perspectives on love, as described in the lyrics. To highlight the two artists' energy, youth, vigour and to further convey the idea of "getting him back," we used highly saturated and brilliant hues.
A high angle shot is used on the front cover. The black clothing used by both artists represents their power, grace, and mystique. The painted graffiti produces a striking contrast that draws attention to the artists in the picture even more. Graffiti is a medium for drawing attention which has become a method to express views and social issues. In order to blend with the overall aesthetics and subject, the title of our album, "GUTS," is written in a red graffiti-style font, symbolising the artists' strength, passion, and dedication. Additionally, a vintage filter is used to showcase authenticity and artistic expression.
The special effect of multiple shadows of images dividing into different colours means to implicate the diverse self of the two artists. The colours imply many emotions, such as sadness, strength, jealousy, and joy, and together they artistically depict the various facets of our artists. This image is a mid-shot and the artists shattered the fourth wall by looking directly at the camera which sends a clear message to the audiences. This therefore increases audience engagement as they may feel more connected to the artists.
The back cover and CD both make use of the butterfly element. Butterflies symbolise change, beauty, and liberation. The first line of the song bridge is, "I wanna..." In her song, Rodrigo enumerated things she "wanna" do to ‘him’, expressing her attitude towards her view in romantic relationships. The ellipsis provides an open-ended response that the audience can analyse and relate to by considering themselves, which raises audience engagement.
Xingtu (醒图), is a Chinese Photoshop application developed by ByteDance. It categories filter by style, the main ones I used are mostly vintage, black and white, and neon colors. Selective desaturation was the first attempt but it did not turn out as impactful, instead, we kept the original bright colours of the graffiti. The photos were shot during nighttime. Our only source of lighting is an LED light which in turn, in the absence of natural light brings out the shadows and colour texture vividly. During post editing, I increased the saturation which creates an expressive and energetic feeling.
Here are some desgin atempts I made while creating:
