Blog 4: Preliminary Task

Updated: Dec 12, 2023

For this music video preliminary task, I’ve developed how to use a green screen and adjust regional colour grading. Most of our scenes were filmed in the green screen room and for preparation, I’ve learned that sufficient lighting is a key aspect.

1. Sufficient light (2 LED lights on each side) will make cropping out easier so

they stand out in this scene rather than being blurred with the background. We’ve taken the easier approach and used automatic cropping on the editing software JianYing. (a Chinese video editing program produced by ByteDance)

It is a very simple approach however, it does not perfectly crop out every bit of the green background. This might be due to the footage filmed having fine details such as untied hair swinging which might be too hard for AI to crop out. Therefore, if I want to incorporate the use of a green screen in my final music video, it is essential to first consider the movement complexity of the person in the scene because it will require further manual cropping to look more refined.

2. The Hue/Saturation Curves 1 bar was used to adjusr regional colour grading using Final Cut Pro using the. First I selected the regions that I wanted to change using a pipette tool. Second, drag the Hue vs Hue and Hue vs SAT lines to change the colour saturation or brightness in the footage. Hue refers to

the dominant colour family. In this footage, I aim to change an orange shirt into pink because our song is related to ‘Barbie’, and editing the shirt’s colour in the post-production stage will make the costume seem more theme fitting. The outcome was successful, however, to make this more detailed, more advanced techniques need to be learned because the adjustment has made the person’s face slightly pink too.

  • The editing is in the style of cutting to the beat. Most of the shot are mid-shots with the main charater 'Barbie' in multiple background settings. One close-up shot is used throughout the preliminary video, a zoom to a camera lens instead of the artist featured.
