'get him back!'

Olivia Rodrigo is an American singer-songwriter. ‘Get Him Back’, is one of the

popular songs from the album ‘GUTS in the genre of pop music. Her quote from Times:

“is about reckoning with those feelings and coming out of that disillusionment and realizing the core of who I am and what I want to be doing and who I want to be spending my time with”.

Lyrics and context:

The ex-boyfriend in this song is directed at Adam Faze.

1.     Sarcastic indications: “He said he’s six-foot-two and I’m, like, “Dude, nice try”

2.     “But I am my father's daughter, so maybe I could fix him”: She wrote this line is because her father is a family therapist and ‘fix’ people. She chose the word ‘treat’ as a metaphor to imply ‘fix’, suggesting she is the daughter of a therapist so maybe she can ‘fix’ her romantic relationship.

3.     Chorus: “I wanna get him back” has a double-meaning of either she wants to rekindle their relationship or returning the favour after someone did something unpleasant to you like “revenge”.

4.     However, her feelings are switching back and forth at the bridge section as she sings:…. While in the scene, she is sitting in a pile of purple petals continue picking. Picking flower petals is a common trope used in love relationships, evokes the classic he loves me or he loves me not game. This conveys the hesitation and her feelings of uncertainty towards the situation of this relationship.

·       I wanna key his car, I wanna make him lunch

·       I wanna break his heart, stitch it right back up

·       I wanna kiss his face with an uppercut

·       I wanna meet his mom and tell her her son sucks

Pros:

-           An interesting storyline is established

-           We can demonstrate opposition through mise én scenes such as contrasting lighting tones and costumes.

Cons:

-           Props, setting, and costume is a key aspect. If the variety of these elements is lacking, the aesthetic would be significantly affected.

-           This is a rather long piece of music compared to most pop songs nowadays. Therefore, meaning more footage needs to be filmed.
