Blog 2: History of Music Distribution and Current Distribution Practices

The distribution of music has changed from purchasing sheet music to physical copies and finally to online distribution.

How was music marketed in the mid to late 20th century?

-           Music labels will record songs for their artists, and manufacture the recordings in large quantities in the form of cassettes, CDs, or vinyl. These will be distributed and sold at local stores. To draw attention to their new album release, companies usually take the approach of radio or TV advertisement. For example, in 1925, a radio broadcast of the Irish tenor, John McCormack’s unreleased recording and the exposure resulted in orders for 150,000 copies.

How do musicians market their music now?

-           Technology has changed music publishing and producing; alongside the massive use of the internet nowadays, audiences now purchase and download music files online. Now often many artists will create their official site on platforms such as Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram for their followers to keep up with their news and status. New releases will be posted and promoted via their official channel. This is an example of direct marketing, the audience will feel more engaged and further strengthen loyalty.

How do and have the big labels market music?

-           Large record labels will market music via music video promotion, live performances, and placement on streaming services and music download platforms. They have the budget to invest in something massive if they believe the artist is worth it and will guarantee they will generate several folds of profit. In addition, record labels may also make artists collaborate, making one of them featured in the other’s single or album. Music is often distributed to streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. Furthermore, other social platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram also serve as promotional sites to brand their music.

What purpose do record labels serve?

Record labels manufacture, distribute, and promote affiliated stars, coordinate sales, manage contracts, and other legal issues. They focus on the business aspect of the star’s career and provide opportunities and expert advice. The top 3 record labels are Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music Entertainment.
