the first time music was merged with a film and was made popular as a form called illustrated song. Sheet music publishers Edward B. Marks and Joe Stern hired George Thomas (an electrician) to use the magic lantern projector to display synchronized still images with a live performance of their song.
EXAMPLE:
“The Little Lost Child”, regarded as the first illustrated song, which is now considered a music video, the editing was simple yet innovative. The director used special transition effects to make it more interesting, sharing the same motive as modern music videos
1920:
the invention of ‘talkies’ made many musical short films. Talkies is a sound film with sound-synchronized motion pictures.
EXAMPLE: 1927 – The Jazz Singer: this was the first time audio and image footages are synced together to create a non-live performance.
1930:
‘Crying For Calorine’ filmed by Warner Bros made to showcase the most popular tunes at the time and was shown in movie theaters before the main presentations
1965:
‘We can work it out’ by The Beatles was considered the first music video to be broadcast on television.

2005 to now:
The YouTube era. YouTube became the main platform for musicians to showcase their work and gain attention. This allowed artists to reach out to a large group of audience while being able to easily download music or videos. Advancements in technology have enabled musicians to explore more visual creativity. For instance, through costume, choreography, CGI, animation, props, lighting, and editing.
